family photosThe biggest issue with being a family portrait photographer is that you never get photos of your own family! Oh, the irony! Most photographers are infinitely more comfortable directing people from behind a camera than posing in front of one, and then there’s the critique aspect: why is the photographer doing that? Why are they standing there? And how much are those prints gunna cost?! So in spite of having two kids (a 4 year old boy and 4 month old little girl), the only photos we have are the one’s we have taken ourselves! And aren’t I constantly reminded about it?! So my advice is this: if you have a family, have some professional portrait photos taken! You won’t regret it. I promise.

Zeinab and Ayman certainly didn’t! We met at a warm and slightly cloudy Wellington Point a few weeks ago and after a brief chat to ascertain the sort of photographs the guys were looking for, we started snapping! Wellington Point jetty is a fantastic place to start and makes for a fantastic backdrop, and luckily we had it all to ourselves that day. As is always the case with family portrait shoots, the star of the show was Eleny, Zeinab and Ayman’s beautiful daughter! Fresh from a snooze and raring to go, she smiled for the camera as we captured some beautiful child portraits and then added Mum and Dad (better get them in a few I suppose!)

The guys looked fantastic in matching black and white, and Eleny looked so cute with her little bow. Shame it spent more time off her head than on it! The sun eventually came out so we headed to arguably my favourite spot in Brisbane for family portraits: Wellington Point’s amazing Moreton Bay fig trees. They look more like something from Lord of the Rings then Brisbane’s bayside, with their gnarled and twisted roots, but aside from looking great, they provide shade; a very good thing on a warm day like today!

I let the guys be themselves for a while and stood back with the big zoom and captured the family as they laughed and chatted – Eleny loving being on dad’s shoulders and playing with his hair!

I find that the best photos from any family shoot are the natural, spontaneous ones; there isn’t the stigma and awkwardness of posing (especially when there’s young kids!) and reactions become more relaxed and authentic.

professional photo shoot family pics

Of course, there is a place for some nice posed photographs with everyone looking at the camera, and although the hardest to capture are probably the ones you will put on your wall.

I also made sure I got some photos of Eleny with Mum and Dad separately – it’s lovely to watch how kids interact with each parent (and makes for a great Facebook profile pic!). Usually dads will start launching children into the air, whereas Mums go for cuddles. Both make for great shots and I always encourage interaction!

From this point, Little Eleny started to tire so again I stood back and captured her as she cuddled into Ayman’s shoulders – how beautiful:)

Just a few more shots by the carpark and the hour was suddenly over – it’s amazing how quickly the time goes, but the guys got some lovely memories and can look back at the photos when Eleny turns 5, 10, and 21 and remember how great she looked and what a beautiful family they make!

“Hi Andy, I have just gone through the CD and absolutely love the images! Really beautiful moments captured. Thank you again!” Zeinab

Brisbane Wedding: Cara and Roland’s Botanic Garden Ceremony

Brisbane Wedding: Cara and Roland’s Beautiful Day:

Date: 18th December 2015, 11am

Location: Garden’s Club, Botanic Gardens, Brisbane

Brisbane wedding photographyWedding photography brisbane

I love photographing Brisbane weddings – I have lived in Brisbane nearly 12 years now and I still marvel at how beautiful she looks on a warm summer’s day! December the 18th was one such day: the sun was shining, it was warm, and there were a few scattered clouds to keep the sun at bay. A perfect day for a Brisbane wedding in other words, and perfect conditions for wedding photography!

I first met Cara and Roland just two days prior to their big day (they both live in Perth but wanted a Brisbane wedding as this is where their family is located) but we were instantly on the same page as to the type of photography they were looking for and the style of their wedding: classical elegance. We went through the format of their Brisbane wedding and worked out a timeline, and took time to just chat and get to know each other; something I find imperative to make the couple feel more comfortable on the most important day of their lives!

Brisbane botanic gardensFast forward two days and the sun was out, the Botanic gardens was bursting with green, and the Garden’s Club was quickly filling up with guests. I arrived early and grabbed a few shots of Roland looking nervous as the guests chatted and mingled, and at precisely 11am, Cara arrived in her bridal car looking stunning and flawless. It was time for action!

The ceremony is the part of the wedding day celebrations that fly past the quickest: as a bride or groom there is so much to remember, all whilst looking good, smiling, and trying to absorb the day! Without doubt the comment I hear most after the wedding is “It all went so fast!” Happily the photographer is there to capture the details, the smiles and the memories.

Roland is of German heritage, and as such some readings (and part of Cara’s vows) were in Deutsch, which added a fun and personal touch to the occasion; although my limited schoolboy German skills were severely tested, and at best I came out of the day with a C+ for effort! Happily the ceremony was conducted in English (by Elke Howard from Ceremonial Moments) so I was able to follow the proceedings of this beautiful Brisbane wedding!

wedding kiss photographyAfter a few beautiful readings, including one in German by Roland’s sister Anne, came everyone’s favourite part of the ceremony: the kiss! This is the first chance the couple get to really express their love for each other and I always find it to be the highlight of the day! It is the build-up to years of a relationship, and the first public expression of love the couple can show on their big day.

Following the kiss comes the formal part of the ceremony with the signing of the register and the certificate, and then the official declaration of marriage! Congratulations Mr & Mrs Treiber; you are now husband and wife!

Following some warm congratulations and a fun group shot we grabbed some shots of the newly weds with their families. Happily, Cara had made this amazingly easy with a concise and detailed shot list (oh, how I love shot lists!) which meant we had more time to head into Brisbane Botanic gardens for some beautiful formal shots of the couple.

I love Brisbane Botanic gardens for wedding photos – there are just so many options and locations, and so much variety! Trees? Check! River? Check! City views? Check! Story Bridge? Check! It helped a lot that Cara and Roland were so much fun and natural to photograph, and so willing to give input and to pander to my silly suggestions!

And what’s a wedding without a celebration?! Following our formal wedding photos in the Botanic gardens’s, we headed back to the Garden’s Cafe for the reception. The cafe was closed to the public for the reception, which kept the event intimate and personal, and the staff had done an amazing job of decorating the venue. The restaurant area was open and light (great for wedding photography!) and the tables close enough to remain personable without being crowded!

It’s capturing the details that I love most about wedding photography: the small things that you may forget about in a few years but which made the day so individual. During any wedding reception, I use the time as people are eating (because no-one wants their photo taking then!) to grab the details: the cake, the flowers, the menu and the decorations. It is usually these photos that get the most comments – these small things make the wedding!

And with any wedding celebration there are some beautiful moments: the cake cutting, the speeches and the first dance. Cara and Roland’s cake was a traditional German cake, and looked amazing on the table next to the wedding flowers. The guys also took the time to pose for a few more photos during the reception. Poor things!

But all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately I had to leave the guys to their celebrations! It was the perfect wedding day and everything went without a hitch. Congratulations Cara and Roland; may your marriage be long and lots and lots of fun! Andy

Engagement Shoot: Ally and Luke’s Family Photo Shoot

Engagement Shoot: Ally & Luke’s Morning at Wellington Point:

Location: Wellington Point Jetty
Date: August 2015, 8am

One of the things I love most about what I do is meeting fun, relaxed people, especially when doing something as amazing and fun as an engagement shoot, and there are very few people more fun and relaxed than Ally and Luke and their beautiful little family!

We met at Wellington Point jetty one clear and surprisingly warm August morning; the guys accompanied by their friend Kelly who had organised the engagement shoot as a surprise gift. Ally mentioned that they had never had a professional photo shoot before, and that they were a little nervous. Well they needn’t have been! They were absolute naturals, and an absolute pleasure to photograph! Luke was throwing poses like he was modelling, Ally never stopped smiling, and even the little guys were impeccably behaved and looked straight at the camera the whole time!

We started taking photos at the jetty – which incredibly didn’t have a single person on it – and grabbed some lovely family shots, then handed the kids to Kelly to capture Ally and Luke loving it up! This they didn’t seem to mind at all! This was an engagement shoot after all!

Then we moved to the beach where the boys had a kick around with a football (Luke is big on his footy and their wedding a few months later had a particular football feel!), and then we headed to the beautiful old fig trees – one of my favourite places in Brisbane for family portrait photography – and snapped a few of the kids and the family together. Even poor Kelly, who had come along to chaperone the kids whilst Ally and Luke smooched it up, was dragged into a photo under protest! She was a bridesmaid at the wedding so at least she got a taste of what was to come on the wedding day!

Even when it came to photographing the kids by themselves, they behaved impeccably and smiled straight into the camera. Better than Mum and Dad if I’m being honest!

The hour flew by but happily I got to photograph this amazing family again a few months later at Ally and Luke’s wedding!
