Everyone loves baby photos: babies are tiny, cute and gorgeous so it is little surprise that every parent loves receiving beautiful photos of their baby a few weeks after their arrival!

Happily Naz and Mohammed were well prepared and got in touch a few weeks before Medinah’s arrival to arrange a photo shoot for when she was just a few days old. Well how cute does she look! We did some studio photos with the family and got some beautiful baby photos using my props: baskets, blankets, and wraps. For around ten minutes! They say you should never work with babies – but sometimes that’s just part of the fun! Medinah had other plans that day and wasn’t as interested in having her photo taken as Mum and dad were!

baby photos brisbane       baby photographs brisbane        newborn photography brisbane

We persevered and got some absolutely beautiful shots but maybe not as many as we would have liked so a week or two later I was back and what a difference a week makes!

Medinah already looked bigger and more alert but happily she was sleeping. We managed to get the majority of the cute sleeping baby photos you see here, but then she decided to see what the fuss was all about!

Her big brown eyes make for gorgeous portrait photos and I think my faves are actually the ones where she is awake!

Naz had some lovely props too – headbands, wraps and clothing – so we had a bit of a dress up and grabbed some photos as we went.

And no newborn photo shoot is complete without the details – we grabbed some photos of Medinah’s tiny feet and hands.

Mother’s Day photo shoots are a great gift idea for the Mum that has everything! Mother’s Day photos are personal, fun, loving, and they last a lifetime! Which is why Ness and Tony booked on a Mother’s Day photo shoot a few weeks before Mother’s Day so that they could print the photos off for Tony’s Mum as a Mother’s Day gift! Very wise thinking!

portrait photography family photography

Wellington Point was our location of choice (it is one of my favourite locations for family portrait photography in Brisbane) and headed to the centuries-old fig trees and started snapping. The guys were amazing! Everyone looked at the camera, smiled and didn’t misbehave! Even the kids were patient and weren’t distracted by the play park!

family photos portrait photography

I got some lovely family photos first and then a few photos of the kids together, including some lovely individual photos, then sent them off to play whilst I got some shots of Mum and Dad being cute! Aaaahhh, I remember those pre-kid days!

We were soon joined by Tony’s brother Matt and his lovely wife and continued snapping – I usually expect around 15 minutes of good photo time before boredom and itchy feet kick in and the specialist tactics take place, but in spite of having a 4-year old with us, we were still able to shoot for much longer!

family photo shoot family photography

I got some couple photographs and some family photos then stood back and got some more spontaneous, unposed photographs with the long lens as the family played and laughed. But sure enough where there’s boys and trees, the guys soon started climbing and swinging and generally being monkeys! No problems, I thought, I’ll grab some nice photos of the adults…hang on, Tony and Matt were up the tree too!

Then as patience started to wane, we headed to the jetty to recharge the batteries and grabbed a few more family photos in the sunshine before Tony grabbed the kids and started throwing them overboard! Actually, he didn’t but it made for some awesome giggling shots!

I used to struggle with what to get my Mum for Mother’s Day but every year we give her something fun and personal: a photo canvas of the grandkids, a photo book of her last visit, or some beautiful framed prints. After all, they are timeless and just keep on giving and no mother ever tires of photos of her children or grandkids!

Engagement Photo Shoot: New Farm Park with Renee and Andrew

Engagement Photo Shoot: New Farm Park with Renee and Andrew:

Location: New Farm Park, Brisbane

Engagement Photo Shoots are a lot of fun! It is probably the first time that the couple have done something for their wedding that suddenly makes everything seem very, very real, so there is a fantastic, excited ambience about them!

couples photoshoot        couples photography        couple photography

Secondly, people look awesome on their engagement photo shoots! They are spending their afternoon with their fiancee looking good – what’s not to love!

couple portraits

And so it was with Renee and Andrew, an amazingly fun couple who are getting married in August this year and wanted some nice photos to include on their wedding invitations. New Farm Park is an amazing place for an engagement photo shoot and just so happened to be a special place for Renee and Andrew so we met up at the Powerhouse and went through the plans for their big day over a beer and then got snapping! Renee had warned me that Andrew isn’t the most comfortable person in front of a camera (Renee on the other hand very much is!) and that I might have my work cut out. He was a professional! I stood back with my long lens and let the guys be themselves and photographed them as they chatted and cuddled, and after a few minutes Andrew was relaxed and having fun!

There are so many locations in New Farm Park that make for great couple photographs so we chose 3 or 4 different spots and once the guys were a bit more relaxed, I pushed the friendship and grabbed some posed shots. By the end Andrew was as comfortable in front of the camera as he was in the pub! It was so much fun and the time really did fly by.

The park was quite busy but we chose our locations and angles well so that the only people in the shots were the beautiful couple – and don’t they look amazing! Renee’s smile is just awesome!

wedding photos     wedding photographers     engagement photos

I asked if there were any shots the guys would like and Andrew was the first to jump in with a few ideas! I love that: I love the enthusiasm and the input! It also means you get the shots you want rather than the photos the photographer wants!

These three photos below are possibly my faves from the engagement photo shoot – Renee and Andrew look so close and in love and the look on Renee’s face as she is showing off her engagement ring is priceless!

But all too soon we had to wrap up, but Andrew said how easy he had found the photo shoot and how much more relaxed he was going to feel at his wedding in August! I think the photos show how much you enjoyed it my friend! I can’t wait until the real thing!

“Hey Andy, thanks so much for yesterday, we had such a great afternoon ( I may have had more fun than Andrew though) haha! He still really enjoyed it which was awesome! He thinks I did extremely well getting on to you for photos… he thinks he will be able to handle wedding photos now!! hehe. Super excited to see your awesome shots!! Renee”

“Hi Andy – the disc arrived yesterday…it was a delightful evening of looking at ourselves!! They are awesome!!! Thanks so much!!! LOVE them.. now to get the invites done.. yippee!!!
 You are the best!! :)Renee”

Wedding Photos: Juliette and Tony‘s Perfect Day at Topiaries:

Date: 20th March 2016

Wedding photos are (in my completely biased opinion!) probably the most important thing that a bride and groom will take from their wedding. Memories do unfortunately fade over the years but photographs last forever. That’s why having a comprehensive reminder of your day is always a wise investment! In the grand scheme of things your photos will be a small cost compared to what you get in return!

brisbane wedding photographer        wedding photographer        wedding photography brisbane

Plus wedding photos are fun! You get to look back and relive the warm and fuzzies from the most important day of your life! So many people say to me that the day flew by way too fast and that having a fantastic collection of wedding photos helps to piece the day together, and also helps to plug the gaps that the bride and groom missed!

wedding photography brisbane wedding photographers

Having a good scope of your day – from getting ready shots right through to the reception – is a great way to keep these memories, and venues like Topiaries are perfect for this! Topiaries is a self-contained venue that allows the bride and groom to get ready on site, to get married in their garden area or chapel, and to party the night away in their reception hall. The grounds are also beautiful meaning you needn’t leave for your bridal party photographs!

gold coast wedding photography wedding photo

Several weeks ago, I was privileged to photograph Juliette and Tony’s perfect day which was held at Topiaries, and I arrived to find the girls in a flurry of activity! Quick hint – if you know what time the photographer is due to arrive, make sure you aren’t having your hair or make up done then. You will be picked on! Poor Skye, Juliette’s maid of honour, had the short straw this day and suffered my camera lens from the moment I arrived! But it was soon Juliette’s turn, which she didn’t seem to mind at all. She had also very thoughtfully hung her dress from the chandeliers of the beautifully decorated room, which made for a fantastic backdrop to her photos!

brisbane wedding photography wedding pictures

Generally I will try and make myself as inconspicuous as possible when I’m photographing the bridal party getting ready, preferring instead to capture things as they happen in a more candid and photo-journalistic style. This makes the bridesmaids feel more relaxed before the main event and allows everyone to concentrate on looking beautiful rather than being forced to pose!

Quite often the boys will be a little reluctant to have their photos taken but it is always a nice mix to get some shots of the boys too. It also makes for a convenient break to allow the girls a few moments of modesty to get in their dresses! Tony’s groomsmen were a great laugh and helped him feel relaxed. Mocking my accent, they called me ‘undies’ for the rest of the day! Cheers, guys! Tony helped get Juliette’s son Slade get dressed and into his bow tie and then dressed himself as his groomsmen struggled tying their ties!

IMG_3093xFor a wedding photographer, it is very important to capture the details of the wedding day – the shoes, flowers, jewellery and clothes. It is these little details that will have been pored over for days if not weeks, and these details are just as important as photos of the guests. I always meet with the bride and groom prior to the big day to discuss the type of wedding photos they are looking for – no point in photographing details if they aren’t wanted at the cost of missing photographs of things that are! I always send through a shot list for this precise reason – add it to the list and I will know to take it! I always encourage sending example shots through for this very same reason!

And then suddenly it was action stations! As the boys headed outside to the ceremony area, Tony started to look a little nervous! The boys lined up in the pagola as the girls filtered outside. Then the bridal song started. It was time to get these guys married!

One photo I will always capture is the look on the groom’s face the moment he sees his wife start to walk down the aisle. To me it is one of the most important photos of the day, and in truth you can never pick what the reaction might be! Sometimes even the toughest blokes will shed a tear, and it’s always fun finding out!

Tony looked delighted at seeing Juliette for the first time that day, but he still managed to keep it together for one very important part of the ceremony. Juliette’s family are originally from Zimbabwe, where traditionally the groom will give the father-in-law a dowry of cattle for his daughter’s hand in marriage. To everyone’s great surprise Tony produced two head of cattle as he shook his father-in-law’s hand. OK, they were plastic and about 5cm high but it was still a very moo-ving moment – one that was legen-dairy. Sorry, I cud have left that bit out. OK, that’s enough cow jokes, there’ll be no udders…. Sorry.

Juliette and Tony’s ceremony was officiated beautifully by Sally Corfield (www.sallycorfield.com.au) who gave a brief history of the bridal couple before launching into the good stuff!

professional wedding photographer professional wedding photography

Sally focussed on the couple – the way a wedding ceremony should do – and told us how and where they met, their likes, dislikes and foibles and the moment they realised that they had fallen in love. To Juliette her kids are her life and it was the moment that Tony said that he loved them that she fell helplessly for him – as a Dad I can understand this sentiment completely!

People often say to me that it must be a lot of pressure being a wedding photographer, that you have a very important job to do and can’t afford to mess up. It can be but it doesn’t faze me at all; but I always think the same about the celebrant – they really do have the most important job on the day and without them the wedding simply can’t take place! Happily, Sally was an amazing professional and the ceremony was flawless!

Juliette’s son and daughter – who looked absolutely adorable! – were prominent in the ceremony; her son Slade had the biggest job of the ceremony as ring bearer, which he accomplished expertly! The vows were heart-warming and spoken perfectly, and then with the signing and the kiss Juliette and Tony were married! Congratulations you beautiful people!

And then it was time for the bridal party photos and happily Topiaries has a wealth of locations for great shots. We started at the viewpoint which has amazing vistas over Samford Valley. The clouds had closed in a little giving us an awesomely dramatic sky and perfect lighting and the results look pretty amazing!

We then headed to the front of the venue and grabbed some shots there before heading to the street and the forested area to the side of the venue. Then as the sun set on a perfect day we headed back into Topiaries for the party! I photographed the empty reception room as everyone had drinks on the deck, which allowed the bridal party to chill out for a while and grab a drink too! Juliette and Tony had decided to have their first dance early on (to get it out of the way?!) and strutted their stuff before officially entering the room! They did a very good job too!

The speeches followed which were equally heart felt and homourous and we saw both tears and laughter – always the sign of a good speech! The room looked spectacular and the cake divine, and Juliette and Tony very graciously arranged a meal for me which I have to say was one of the best I have had in a very long time! Hats off to the Topiaries staff too who were efficient and polite and made my job a lot easier!

Engagement Shoot: Kirralee and Kylle

Engagement Shoot: Kirralee and Kylle in Brisbane Botanic Gardens:

Date: 17th March 2016

Location: Brisbane Botanic Gardens

couples photographer engagement photography

Engagement shoots are a fantastic idea in my humble and totally unbiased opinion. Firstly you get to spend a fun afternoon with your loved one. (And me..) Secondly you get some amazing photos for your wedding invites and gift table on your actual wedding day. And thirdly you get to learn some cool and groovy poses so that you can smile and ‘Blue Steel’ the show on your wedding photos!

portrait photography portrait photographer

I had met Kirralee a few months earlier when she booked me in to be her wedding photographer but I didn’t meet Kylle until two weeks prior to the engagement shoot. He mentioned that he would quite like a dry run before the big day so that he didn’t ruin their wedding photos with awkward stances and fake smiles. Very good plan! We arranged to do an engagement shoot in Brisbane Botanic Gardens one cloudy but pleasant afternoon in March and met by the main entrance on Alice Street.

“Got any thoughts?” I asked,

“Nah,” Kylle answered. Cool, lets begin!

brisbane wedding photographer       wedding photography       family photography

The guys were actually pretty good right from the start. I gave a little guidance but I always feel that too much micro-managing leads to even more awkwardness, so I prefer some gentle initial suggestions and then let the couple take the reins! We started by the lake, trying our best to avoid the ibises that tried valiantly to photobomb our shots and then headed back outside the park to get some photos by the fig tree roots that have reclaimed the park railings.

newborn photography baby photos

family portrait       family photography       family photos

The good thing about Brisbane Botanic Gardens for couple photography and engagement shoots is that there is such a variety of backgrounds and points of interest. We found a massive banyan tree and posed around the roots, and it wasn’t long before Kylle was up there chilling out and, quite literally, monkeying around!

photography brisbane wedding photographers

I had photographed a wedding here a few months prior and had loved the bamboo groves that dotted the park so we headed there for some nice romantic shots. Bamboo always adds interest and depth to a photograph, and they always give a lot of texture and interest to black and white photos.

photography brisbane brisbane photographers

We didn’t just go for smiling-at-the-camera shots, and mixed it up with some moody lighting and Calvin Klein poses. Kylle in particular enjoyed this part!

Old Petrie Town Wedding: Beth and Jason’s Perfect Day:

Date: 5th March 2016

Location: Old Petrie Town, Brisbane

brisbane wedding photographer brisbane wedding photography

Old Petrie Town is one of those places I had been trying to get to for some time but never seemed to make it. If you have never been: go! It’s amazing! Add a perfect wedding day in there and it’s even better!

Jason contacted me a few months prior to his big day asking if I was free to photograph his wedding – I was, so we arranged to catch up at Old Petrie Town for a chat about his plans and to scope out some photo locations. Happily Old Petrie Town is one of those places that looks good regardless of where you point your camera so we weren’t spoilt for choice, and there’s even plenty of spots to photograph should there be rain on the big day!

Fast forward a few months and I was back at Old Petrie Town for real! And it looked amazing! I arrived over an hour early as I usually do when I am photographing a wedding (you never know what the traffic’s going to be like, and it’s always good to check the place isn’t underwater!) and went for a wander. I had only met Beth a few days prior to the wedding as she had been away when I met Jason at the venue, but both bride and groom had been very laid back in the few months counting down to the wedding, as Jason was on his big day when he arrived with his dashing groomsmen!

The location for the ceremony was impeccable – beneath and in front of a gorgeous centuries-old fig tree. What an amazing backdrop! I snapped people arriving and taking their seats and the groomsmen looking nervous and anxious. I love the build up to the ceremony – the anticipation and nervous tension before the bride’s arrival! And even laid back Jason looked a little bit nervous!

But he needn’t have: Beth arrived on time looking stunning and her bridesmaids looked amazing in their matching blue and red dresses and bright red shoes! I took a few snaps of Beth’s Dad lowering the veil: I had been given the heads up that Dad was odds on favourite to shed a few tears on the day and he did; good on him!

One of my favourite parts of the day was when Beth asked if we had done all of the ‘nice’ photos. Sure, I replied, why? The bridesmaids all ripped off their high heels and brought out some comfy bright red pumps for the rest of the afternoon! Outstanding!

The sky had been darkening for a short while and it did eventually rain – but I say this honestly: rain is not a bad thing! First of all rain is meant to be lucky, secondly an umbrella makes for an amazing prop and forces you to snuggle up to your new spouse, and thirdly: rain means rainbows! I don’t think I have ever seen anyone as excited as these guys to have a rainbow in their photos!

newborn baby photos photographer

I used the rain as an opportunity to grab some shots of Jason and Beth sharing an umbrella and we headed towards the other end of Old Petrie Town, to the old train station: probably my favourite part! The rain eased off so we got some nice shots of the groomsmen and bridesmaids then I took off the pace and let Jason and Beth relax and be themselves. That didn’t mean I stopped shooting! I was just a little more inconspicuous about it!

But all good things must come to an end and I finally let the guys chill out and have a few drinks before the start of the reception, which was on site at the upstairs function room of the Heritage Hotel. I headed in first to grab some shots of the table settings and decorations, and a quick portrait of each of the guests.

Portrait Photography: Steph and Luke’s Wello Point Session!

Portrait Photography: Steph and Luke’s Wello Point Session!

Date: 1st April 2016

Location: Wellington Point, Redlands

Portrait photography is a lot of fun! You get to meet some fantastic people and photograph them in awesome locations! I met Steph, Luke, Peyton and Caleb at Wellington Point – my favourite place on Brisbane’s Bayside for portrait photography – and headed straight to the jetty. Poor Caleb had fallen asleep in the car and was still dozing when I started shooting – poor guy might regret that when he turns 21!

I always make a point of learning everyone’s names at a photo shoot – it helps with getting their attention, plus it’s just common courtesy! “You won’t have any problems remembering the names today,” said Luke; “I’ve got the kid’s names tattooed on my arm!” Haha, thanks Dad!

Caleb soon woke up and happily he wasn’t spooked by the strange bloke pointing a camera at him! In fact, he broke into the biggest smile of the day! And he scored a kiss on the cheek from his sister, Peyton!

We did a few shots on the jetty and in the small park in the middle of the Wellington Point park area, and then headed to the big fig trees where you are always guaranteed shade and amazing backdrops!

It’s always nice to get a few shots of each child with Dad and Mum seperately – as you can see, it was all smiles for Dad and all cuddles for Mum!

portrait photos portrait photography brisbane

The kids loved climbing amongst the roots and hiding behind the branches. Let them play I say! Some of the best shots will come from kids simply being kids!

And as a Dad myself, I loved how close Peyton is to her younger brother; they simply adore each other and weren’t shy having a little kiss for the camera! Honestly, doesn’t this just melt your heart!

wedding photography

Portrait photography has many guises; the group family photo, the couples photo, the kids photo, some black and white photos, and some spontaneous photos. We got them all that morning! Maybe it was because the kids had been swimming and were half a step behind but they certainly didn’t mind the camera and smiled brilliantly! Even Mum and Dad did a pretty good job! And remember that time before kids? When it was just the two of you? Yeah, me neither, but there was once upon a time a few years where it was just you two – romance, nights out, nights in – well kids kind of ends all that! So I make it a point to grab at least one couples photo of Mum and Dad, just so they can remember the good old days!

But let’s be honest, it’s all about the kids! So the last fifteen minutes were all about Peyton and Caleb being cute and looking awesome with their beautiful curls and fairy dress (Peyton, not Caleb…)

Then with five minutes to go we let the kids run free and they dived onto the climbing frame and were at the top before I could change my settings! Awesome: capturing kids being kids! Exactly what we wanted!

And all too soon our session was done. I would be fairly sure the swimming and the climbing would have meant a peaceful and early night for Mum and Dad! Thanks guys, I had a blast; hope you love the shots!

The photos arrived on Monday; I have been meaning to email you to say thank you but haven’t had a chance! The photos look good and  there are some really cute ones of the kids. I am more than happy to pass your details on to anyone who is looking for a photographer, we enjoyed our experience and are very happy with the results. Studio Shoot and Cake Smash: Madelyn’s First Birthday!

Madelyn’s First Birthday Studio Shoot and Cake Smash:

Date: 19th March 2016, 9am

Location: At Home, Bridgeman Downs

studio photography       baby photography       newborn photoshoot

I love doing studio photo shoots but don’t get to do them as much as I’d like; I think there’s an assumption attached to them that they are going to be a bit too stuffy and formal (and expensive!) but this isn’t the case at all! I have a portable photography studio so I can come to your house and get studio quality photos without the hefty price-tag (a portable studio means no rent!)

I was fortunate enough to do an on location family studio shoot for Lauren, Hayden and Madelyn last year in Wellington Point and they very kindly invited me back to capture some photographs for Madelyn’s first birthday. I didn’t need asking twice! I headed to their home in Bridgeman Downs one warm and sunny Saturday morning, which I found to be a hive of activity in preparation for the impending celebrations. I added to the melee as I colonised one corner of the house to set up the studio (a simple, unobtrusive process that takes 20 minutes or so) and by 9am on the dot we were ready to shoot!

The best bit of advice I can give when photographing kids is to work quickly and to have lots of breaks to maintain their interest! We used the breaks to grab a dose of air-con (it was 34 degrees outside!) and to give Madelyn a rest from the prying camera! She did incredibly well and posed perfectly with Mummy and Daddy, then tried out the rugs and cushions I had brought along for some solo shots; but the hero of the morning was the pink helium balloons which she was intrigued by! Props are great for maintaining interest and for getting some awesome facial expressions! Good work Mummy!

After around half an hour of family pics we headed to the garden for the cake smash! I love photographing cake smashes as you really never know what’s going to happen: confused innocence or outright carnage! Happily Madelyn was somewhere in between and happily demolished the cake for us without sending it flying through the air!

Gen and Regan’s Toowoomba Wedding

Toowoomba Wedding: Gen and Regan’s Perfect Day!:

Date: 14th February 2016

Location: Vacy Hall and Gip’s Restaurant, Toowoomba

toowoomba wedding photography toowoomba wedding photographer toowoomba photographer

Being a Brisbane-based wedding photographer means that I can cover a lot of locations within a relatively short drive; Gold Coast weddings, Sunshine Coast weddings, Brisbane weddings and, as in Gen and Regan’s case; Toowoomba weddings. A lot of people assume that I have extra travel fees to photograph their wedding in Toowoomba (I don’t!) or assume that I won’t travel up the range (I will!), so I don’t get to head up as often as I’d like, but I do like the leafy streets, the cooler air and the beautiful venues they have up there. Just ask Gen and Regan, an awesome couple I photographed on Valentine’s Day this year!

I headed to the boys first and grabbed a few shots of the guys fine-tuning their wardrobe – tieing laces, tieing ties and fastening cufflinks. The boys were high spirited and excited and were loving the chance to dress up and to laugh at each other’s attempts at formal attire!! We did a few nice posed shots outside, then it was off to see how the girls were shaping up!

I drove fifteen minutes to the gorgeous Vacy Hall where Gen and the girls were relaxing, having had their hair and make-up done earlier in the day. I had never had the privilege of photographing inside Vacy Hall before, but wow! What a stunning location. The decor is amazing and elegant, and was an absolute treat for a wedding photographer like myself!

Gen was in an incredibly relaxed mood and played with her new-born daughter as her bridesmaids whirled and organised around her! The colour theme for the wedding was purple, and could be seen in the dresses, the boy’s ties and waistcoats, and Gen’s incredible hair! Awesome!

I find that allowing preparations to take their course works best for the pre-Wedding photos: too much stopping, starting and posing throws everyone off their balance and increases nervousness, so it’s much better to stand back and capture everything unfold. More often than not, any relaxation is kicked into touch the moment the dress is on and the bridesmaids are fastening the straps – suddenly everything becomes real as action time looms!

Save for one zip-based mishap, the girls were ready with plenty of time to spare so we grabbed some shots both inside Vacy Hall and on the deck outside, careful not to be seen as the ceremony was just across Russell Road in the garden of Gip’s Restaurant! Gen’s brother, David, came to check that things were running smoothly; the poor guy had the twin responsibilities/privileges of walking Gen down the aisle and being MC for the evening!

Gen and Regan had recently had a beautiful little girl (congratulations Guys!) so I was able to grab a few shots of Mum and daughter before heading across the road to the beautiful grounds of Gip’s Restaurant, built next to a gorgeous mansion dating from 1860, where the ceremony was due to start. And what a day it was for a wedding! Not a cloud in the sky and a balmy (for Toowoomba!) 33degrees! The congregation had gathered, the boys were attaching their coursages; all that we needed was our bride!

The garden set up was spectacular, and the amazing floral arrangements complimented the location. As 3 o’clock ticked past, Regan started to look nervous, checking his watch and looking over his shoulder to Vacy Hall! But her wedding day is one occasion a bride is allowed to be late, and at 3.05pm on Valentine’s Day, Gen arrived on David’s arm and walked down the aisle to marry the man of her dreams! The look on Regan’s face couldn’t have been better!

After we ditched the congregation following the ceremony, they had stayed on the lawn for canapes and drinks (nice!) so after an hour or so of photographs, we went to join them. It was such a lovely way to mingle and catch up with friends; and each other! All too often the first time the bride and groom get to chat to each other on their wedding day is after the guests have all gone home and I openly advocate spending just 10 – 15 minutes without friends, family, photographers (!!) and just sit and chat as husband and wife!

Ten minutes before the reception is due to start, I always duck into the venue to grab some shots of the room looking its best before bread crumbs, wine and handbags get dispersed around the tables! And what a room this was! The James Taylor Room at the adjoining Clifford House takes some beating with its high arched windows and beautiful French doors. The decoration was elegant and purple, and the cake (which I got to taste at the end of the night!) was amazing!

Gold Coast Wedding: Jac and Mat’s Hinterland Marriage

gold coast wedding photographer

Gold Coast Wedding: Jac and Mat’s Amazing Hinterland Marriage!:

Date: 31st October 2015

Location: A Private Property on Pocket Road, Numinbah Valley, Gold Coast Hinterland

wedding photographer wedding photography

One of the best things about being a wedding photographer in South East Queensland is the variety of venues you get to visit. Some are rural, some urban, and some are in between. Jac and Mat’s wedding location was very much the former! I like to think I know the Gold Coast hinterland pretty well, but the private property on which Jac and Mat got married took some finding! Jac’s directions simply stated: “Drive along Pocket Rd and stop when you see a cow shaped letter box….!” Oooooo Kaaaayy! As it happened it was surprisingly easy to find, and what a spot! I fell in love with it instantly – a beautifully undulating block of land with a copse of trees blocking the road and backed by gorgeous mountains. Add a lake, a beautiful wooden home and an awesome level area and gazebo (ideal for a wedding ceremony…), and you’d struggle to find anywhere more ideal for a country wedding!

gold coast photographer wedding photography

Fast forward to the wedding day and the weather was perfect: clear, warm and sunny. The guys had been busy and had erected a marquee for their reception and had thrown up a mini city of tents for friends and family! And the gents toilets? Stacked bales of hay! The area was a hive of activity of decorating, tweaking and finalising, so to avoid being thrown up a ladder to hang lanterns, I headed to the house to photograph the girls getting ready!

wedding photographer brisbane wedding photographer

The hair and make up guys worked their magic as Jac and her bridesmaids sipped champagne; and what a great job they did! The girls looked amazing, and judging by the relaxed atmosphere that prevailed, they did it effortlessly and without any stress or meltdowns!

I snap away furiously as the bridesmaids are getting their hair and make-up done, then for modesty reasons, I disappear to photograph the ‘still life’ aspects of the day – the perfume, flowers, shoes and (unless the boys are trustworthy!) the rings – as the bride hops into her dress.

brisbane wedding photographersMat was far too laid back to get photos of the boys getting ready – plus he was far too busy decorating and fine tuning the reception marquee anyway! In order to make sure he didn’t miss out completely, I grabbed a few more photos of Jac by herself around the homestead and then headed to the ceremony area to grab some candid shots of the boys looking nervous (and drinking beer!) as the guests arrived and mingled. One of my personal favourite moments of the day was when Sonny – Jac and Mat’s beautifully natured fur baby – turned up in matching cuffs and ‘shirt’ and with a GoPro attached to his collar!

And all of a sudden it was action stations! Sarah Alexander (www.sarahmayalexander.com.au/) flawlessly officiated and kept the laid back feeling to the day. In another unique twist, the girls drove themselves in Jac’s elaborately decorated/vandalised car to the top of the paddock and walked down to the pagola together, smiling and laughing and truly loving the occasion. The look on Mat’s face when he saw his bride-to-be was priceless:)

This was the second wedding I have photographed with Sarah officiating and she always does a great job of keeping the ceremony about the couple. We heard how Jac and Mat met and how they share a mutual love of travel (when I emailed Jac a few weeks after the wedding to let her know her wedding photos were ready, she replied to say they were just boarding a cruise ship in the Caribbean and would be heading to Mexico after that! Jealous? Yeah!) The ceremony couldn’t have been more ‘Jac and Mat’ – informal, fun and full of love!

Following the ceremony, I always allow a good 10 – 15 minutes of spontaneous congratulations – we will often capture some of the best moments of the day at this point, with expressions of joy, tears and laughter. I follow this with a group shot and photos with the family; after all, when does everyone look this good?!

And then its the photographers favourite part of the day – the Bridal Party Photos! After the suspense and build up of the ceremony, this tends to be the most relaxed part of the day: friends having fun, having a drink, and allowing someone to capture it all. I generally mix in a handful of posed shots with some spontaneous, casual moments and just let the guys be themselves. Sonny joined us of course and we headed to the creek behind the pagoda for some posed shots before heading into one of the paddocks for some more casual photos.

At 6pm, I left the guys to enjoy their drinks and headed to the marquee area where I found the Mexican themed reception in very full swing! Being a self catering venue meant that all drinks were free pour, including the tequila! Happily it was an amazingly clear day so everyone relaxed outdoors on mats, plucking beers from a cooler and laughing harder than just about any wedding reception I’ve ever attended! As the sun dropped, the fires were lit and the party continued into the night.

And then to the first dance, which is rarely (ever?!) a newly wed’s favourite part of their wedding day! The guys did a decent job and soon the dance floor was packed and continued to be so far into the night. I bid my farewells and headed home under an amazing blanket of stars, sorry to be leaving and sure that there would be a lot of sore heads the next day! Congratulations guys; what an amazing day!
